The job goes to one licensed concreter who works Nikenbah. They quote and do the work.
Acreage living, acreage concrete
Nikenbah sits on the southern side of Hervey Bay, with acreage blocks mixed in among newer residential allotments. On the bigger properties, concrete work tends to be practical rather than decorative: a machinery or hay shed, a slab for a horse float or tractor, a long driveway from the road to the house.
A shed slab on acreage often needs to carry real weight, so the thickness, mesh and edge footings matter more than the finish. Plan where power and water need to come up through the slab before the pour.
Rural crossovers and long drives
Where a property fronts a rural road, the crossover is built to a different council standard drawing from a suburban one (FC-230-03 for rural crossovers on the Fraser Coast). A new crossover still needs a council permit. The crossover guide covers the steps.
Long driveways on acreage are often only partly concreted, usually the section near the house and shed, with gravel for the rest. Where concrete meets gravel, a thickened edge stops the slab edge breaking off as the gravel washes away.
Drainage on open blocks
Open blocks shed a lot of water in a summer storm. Slabs should sit slightly above the surrounding ground, with falls that send water away from sheds and the house. Where a driveway crosses a natural drainage line, it may need a culvert or a dish drain rather than a flat slab across it.
Access for trucks
Concrete trucks are heavy and acreage ground can be soft after rain. Agree on the route the truck will take, keep it away from septic systems and soft spots, and be ready to delay the pour if the ground is too wet. On longer runs, a pump or a line pump may be needed.
Getting it quoted
Call 0489 955 511 with the job, the size and the shed plans if you have them. Your details go to one licensed concreter who covers Nikenbah, and they come back to you to measure and quote. For a new home on the block, see house and extension slabs.
Questions from Nikenbah
Do I need council approval for a new driveway crossover?
On roads controlled by Fraser Coast Regional Council, a new crossover needs a council permit and must be built to council's standard drawing. Repairing an existing crossover to the standard drawing does not need a permit. State-controlled roads are handled by Transport and Main Roads.
Do I need approval for a shed slab?
Small garden sheds are often exempt from building approval in Queensland, but larger sheds, garages and carports usually need it. The shed supplier or a building certifier can tell you, and the shed kit's engineering sets out what the slab needs.
