Driveway Crossovers on the Fraser Coast

The strip between your boundary and the road belongs to council. Here is what that means for a new driveway.

The short answer

The crossover is the part of the driveway between your property boundary and the road. It sits on council land, so it is not entirely your call. On roads that Fraser Coast Regional Council controls, a new vehicle crossover needs a permit from council, and it has to be built to council’s standard drawings.

Always check the current requirements and fees with council before work starts. The information here is from council’s published form, fact sheet and policy, and those can change.

When you need a permit

  • A new crossover needs a permit.
  • Substantially changing an existing crossover needs to comply with the standard drawing too.
  • Maintenance or repair of an existing crossover does not need a permit, as long as the work follows the relevant standard drawing.

If the crossover is required as part of a development permit, council says no further application fee applies.

Which standard applies

Council publishes standard drawings for crossovers: FC-230-01 for residential, FC-230-02 for commercial and FC-230-03 for rural. Where a site cannot use the standard design, council can ask for a specific design certified by a Registered Professional Engineer of Queensland (RPEQ).

How many crossovers

Council generally approves one crossover per property. A second may be considered in some cases, subject to a separate technical assessment.

State roads

If your property fronts a state-controlled road, the crossover is a matter for the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads rather than council.

What to have ready

Council’s application asks for details of the proposed works, the owner’s permission, and a site plan showing distances from the boundary lines. An incomplete application is treated as not meeting the criteria, so it pays to get it right first time.

Where this fits in the job

The crossover usually gets built with the driveway, so sort the permit before the concreter books the pour. A concreter who works on the Fraser Coast will know the drawings. When you are ready, read about concrete driveways in Hervey Bay or call 0489 955 511.

  • Your details go to one licensed local concreter, not a list of five
