What Goes Into a Concrete Driveway Quote in Hervey Bay
The things that move a driveway price up or down, so you can compare two quotes properly.
Why there is no honest price per square metre here
Driveway prices are often quoted per square metre, but the number on its own tells you very little. Two driveways of the same size can differ a lot in price because of what has to be removed first, what goes underneath, how thick the slab is and how the concrete gets there. This page lists what changes the quote, so you can compare like with like. It does not give prices, because any figure here would be out of date or wrong for your job.
What changes the price
Size and shape. Bigger is cheaper per square metre, up to a point. Curves, tight corners and lots of edges take more boxing and more labour than a simple rectangle.
What is there now. Breaking out and removing an old driveway costs money, and so does disposing of the rubble. Clearing grass and topsoil is cheaper than cutting out old concrete.
The base. A driveway needs a compacted base. If the ground is soft or the old base has failed, more preparation goes in before any concrete does.
Thickness and steel. A thicker slab with heavier mesh costs more and lasts longer under heavy vehicles. The quote should name both.
The finish. A plain broomed finish costs least. Exposed aggregate, coloured and stencilled finishes cost more in materials and labour. Sealing is usually extra.
Access. If the concrete truck can back up to the job, it is straightforward. If it cannot, the concrete goes in by barrow or pump, and a pump is a separate cost.
The crossover. A new crossover needs a council permit and has to be built to the council standard drawing, which adds work and fees. See the crossover guide.
Comparing quotes
Put the quotes side by side and check each one names the same things: area, demolition, base, thickness, mesh, finish, joints, sealing, crossover and clean-up. A cheaper quote that leaves out the base or the mesh is not cheaper.
